Essential Reading Intervention for at-risk readers
In addition to REAP’s Structured Literacy training programs, our Literacy Leaders work with small groups of at-risk readers and their teachers using Structured Literacy to quickly build critical reading skills and get them on track for success.
REAP Literacy Leaders work for 10-12 weeks (about 24 hours) with small groups of at-risk readers who have documented deficits in crucial reading skills. Our Literacy Leaders work directly with the kids to deliver intensive, targeted reading intervention to quickly accelerate students’ reading skills.
We reassess after 10-12 weeks and roll out the next group. Some students may continue into the next group if they need further intervention.
We select schools with a high need, limited budgets, and a commitment to serve students AND to build teachers’ skills. We group students based on similar instructional needs. We identify the students and track progress with Acadience Reading Assessments. Our goal is to move students forward quickly—ideally to grade level—and to generate true, measurable academic literacy progress.
Teachers also benefit
Teachers benefit from the interventions, too. Essential Intervention programs take place in schools where REAP has already trained teachers in the basics of Structured Literacy. However, this level of intensive intervention requires advanced training that few teachers are prepared to deliver. The teachers observe and participate in some of the small-group sessions led by REAP Literacy Leaders. This modeling and hands-on experience with REAP experts is very beneficial for teachers, empowering them to further reinforce the literacy skills in the classroom and move their struggling readers forward with confidence.
It takes a lot of logistical coordination and buy-in from a school to pull off a program like this, and these schools have already demonstrated their ongoing commitment to building great reading teachers to serve their large populations of at-risk students.
You can help REAP put at-risk readers on track for success
Your donation will enable REAP to provide life-changing intervention for struggling readers who are falling precariously behind. Without intensive reading remediation, thousands of Atlanta kids might never catch up to their peers and will likely struggle to complete high school. With your help, REAP’s reading experts can literally change the lives of some of these children, working directly with at-risk readers to elevate their literacy skills, putting them on track to become confident learners with opportunities for the future.
